A little bit about me...

I am a second degree seeking student at the University of South Alabama. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from 2003. I am currently seeking a second Bachelors, senior status, in Special Education. My desire to seek a second degree is to assure each child has an advocate and to become more involved with the needs of my own special needs six year old boy. I have been in the Alabama Educational System since 2003. I taught one year in Conecuh County at Lyeffion Jr. High School under the administration of Diana Lyons, 2003-2004. I taught one year in the Monroe County School System at Monroeville Junior High under the administration of Lana Wilson, 2004-2005. I am currently in the Mobile County System and have been since 2007. I currently work under Title 1 and currently under the administration of Joe Toomey.

In Relation to My Surroundings

As a educator I relate to the youth simply because it was not that long ago to which I was a youth. I recall the academic endeavors I experienced with pleasure and I recall those not so pleasant. I reflect on the teachers that made a difference in my academic career but I also reflect on the teachers that made my academic experience quite indifferent. I communicate with my students and their parents continuously. As a parent, I relate to the parents concerns. I am open for any means of communication whether it is via phone, e-mail, Skype, face book, text messaging, or twitter. I am also open to spontaneous visit on my planning time and after school hours. The common goal is the success of my students and I do all necessary to assure just that. In the mist of communicating well with my students/parents; I will communicate effectively with the faculty and staff to assure an conducive academic environment is held.

LifeSkills

I see it as a necessity to allow life to imitate art. The curriculum my class and I discuss will be related to actual life experiences. This will enable my class to feel comfortable amongst each other and to assure each other that no one person problem is single. Other classmates are experiencing very similar difficulties whether it is academic or personal. Having life issues is just life. The difficulties of life will not go away and if anything situations will magnify. I believe if you mold children early to except their imperfections and life circumstances you will incorporate stronger humane beings. "Better out than in!"

Teaching in a Diverse Society

“If you have come here to help me, then you are wasting your time, but if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

As an educator, my goal is to give each student an equal yet quality education. There are a number of laws established to protect a certain type of student however; there are no laws against institutionalized treatment. Institutionalized treatment results in little to none education for a particular race of students. The race in particular is African American. As early as elementary school, students are required to standardized test. Standardize testing is targeted towards the success of white American’s so a lack of opportunity is presented to the entire minority race. Students of color are limited from the very beginning and my place as an educator is to decrease this behavior from occurring. I am fully aware of the laws I must abide in my position as an educator but while successfully fulfilling the status quo I will stretch the boundaries and use these very laws to full advantage.

Unfortunately, the world we live in is black and white. Education must find a healthy medium to instruct accordingly so that it is understood amongst our students the need to understand and not harbor bitterness. One should continue the growth of case, Mills v. Board of Education (1972) where financial issues prevented the education of seven disabled students. I look at every student as disabled and some students because of race are more disabled than others. Approaching each student as an advocate and not accepting failure or denial as an option to enhance a win win educational setting. The interior is a reflection of the exterior. One has to think it to do it; it is a state of mind.

My time as an educator will be abiding my own set of rules set forth by the government while implementing those same rules to the welfare of my students. My position and strength will project towards my students whom need and acquire that I enhance their direction for the future. A successful outcome is desired for today’s youth and my education and training will provide just that.

Technology in My Classroom

I was not born in a technological era but I was definitely raised into a generation that found technology essential for survival. Currently I own a PC and an I phone both of which I can not function a day without. I began to type papers as early as Middle School. At that time, typewriters were the dominant means to complete a typed document. Three years later, computers completely dominated the scene and a desktop was of high demand. Now, computers are in the form of phones and pads. I am able to manage anything from the click of my phone. I am extremely knowledgeable of all Microsoft programs, blogging, wiki, Google doc's, Google Earth, Time-toast, Picasso picture editing, social networks etc. I feel in some form, all of these can be and will be incorporated into my classroom. Blogging promotes writing, the expression of ideas and thoughts while promoting a sense of personal importance for my students. Google Earth enables students to explore the world, dream locations, and a electronic trip to these destinations. Case in point, my brother is stationed in Hawaii. My sister in law has visited him twice and she would always tell us how the plan is above the Pacific Ocean two hours of the 13 hour flight. Amazingly, during my Google Earth project I was actually able to view the large body of water that separates Hawaii from the rest of the world. The visual graphics were awesome and seeing as how I am 29 years of age and delighted in the experience; just imagine what that experience can do for students during their primary years. I personally testify to how electronics have grown over the past ten years. Technological growth will continue to enhance and we as an educational system must except the growth and jump on board with evolution. Technology will be the avenue for educational growth. It will be an extreme area of interest and I promote the intake of technology into educational curriculum.

My Desire to Teach

Often there are too many teachers and not enough educators. No two children will learn in the same manner. Children are a sponge of this world. All of that which is negative and positive will intake to each child. As a educator, my goal is to make a lasting impression in the school system and move beyond teaching. One must appeal to the diversity of a school system and a classroom. One must also account for the difference in gender and race. Depending on the race, that will adequately give one an impression of the academic environment of which each student is driven. Once an teacher steps into the place of educator, one will exude a passion that will take the classroom teacher outside of a job and into her profession. I speak with power and conviction because these are my efforts in my profession within the educational system. Today, educational curriculum is vague and unless their are educators present to slice through this vague curriculum and assure that it appeals to the variety of children within a classroom then the past with continuously repeat. Today, there are too many children uneducated and unmotivated. Teachers lack the potential to appeal to each student within the classroom while assuring to embrace their individual talent. As an "educator" I will strive to seek my students personal learning style whether it is visual, tactile, or auditory. Regardless of each student's learning technique; it is my job to assure the curriculum measures to individual needs. In conclusion, I will assure my students have a clear understanding of self and potential of the intelligence trapped within. "Every child can learn and it is my duty to educate, accordingly."
